Hi Duncan, I haven't tried a scooter in Beijing, but there are lots of bike lanes so you don't have to fight cars and trucks for lanes. Beijing's got huge roads and central planning in its favor, not to mention lots of safe public transport options. Jakarta definitely needs better mass transit. The government's designated a lane for buses in many of the city's streets, but there aren't enough buses and many people think the buses aren't safe.

I heard the horror stories about Jakarta's traffic before I went, but I thought, "How much worse could it be than Beijing's?" Boy did I underestimate Jakarta.

Great story. I was scared for you. Hurry back to Beijing, where it's much safer on the streets (never thought I'd hear myself say that!).

Love the blog...

Have you ridden (is that a word?) a scooter here in Beijing? What's your comparison of navigating the roads in Indo, and navigating the roads in Beijing?
